Why this Challenge is so important

Sir Ranulph Fiennes is hoping to raise £3 million for Marie Curie Cancer Care through this Everest Challenge.
The money will be used by the charity to expand its Delivering Choice Programme, which aims to revolutionise care of the dying in the UK – enabling more people to be able to make the choice to be cared for at home at the end of life.
Care at home is vitally important – research commissioned by Marie Curie Cancer Care shows that 65 per cent of people, if they were terminally ill, would choose to die at home. In reality, only 25 per cent achieve their wish.
Marie Curie Cancer Care has piloted its Delivering Choice Programme to improve services which allow all terminally ill and end of life patients – regardless of type of illness – to be cared for and to die in their place of choice.
Care at home is provided by professionals like our Marie Curie Nurses – pictured above at the pre-expedition press conference.
The Delivering Choice Programme works in partnership with local organisations, both health and social care, to improve planning, co-ordination and uptake of existing end of life care services.
Pilot Programmes are running in Tayside, Leeds, Barnet and South East London.
The first pilot Programme in Lincolnshire has been found by the King’s Fund to have helped significantly more people choose to die at home at no greater cost to the NHS.

I have such respect for the work done by Marie Curie nurses.Having experienced their very special care first hand, when my mother spent her last days at home, with all her family around, at peace and in comfort.
The dignity afforded to the terminally ill, by being able to pass away at home, is something that no one should be denied.
I am currently raising money to support this work, this cause and the very special care.
