Sir Ranulph safely back in Base Camp

April 28th, 2008 at 1:56 pm |

Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Team Marie Curie have arrived back in Base Camp after a three night trip to Camp 2.

The acclimatisation trip proved to be a tough one. Because of the altitude, even completing the simplest of tasks, like bending over to pick something up, leaves you out of breath. Many climbers develop what is known as the Khumbu Cough, a dry, tickly, hacking cough that is difficult to shake.

The coughing, combined with the sound of the wind ripping across the tents, the endless avalanches, and ice shed from the surrounding seracs (ice towers), means getting a good night’s sleep is one of the biggest challenges.

The team left Camp 2 at 7am this morning and arrived safely in Base Camp after negotiating the constantly shifting and collapsing Icefall.

Hi Rob, just wishing you and your mates congrats on a safe return to BC. Whereas I have never experienced the disturbances of sleeping at camp 2, I can only image that our baby Skylar makes sleeping at sea level perhaps equally fitful:-).
    Best to you and team.
    Tim
