Sir Ranulph leaves for summit

May 20th, 2008 at 6:18 pm |

This morning Sir Ranulph Fiennes, OBE, left Everest Base Camp for the summit of the world’s highest mountain. Team Marie Curie walked in darkness to the base of the Khumbu Icefall for the very last time.

By lunchtime the team had arrived at Camp 2, first port of call. Tomorrow will be a rest day before the team push on for Camp 3. Team marie Curie are expecting to summit at about 3am GMT on Saturday, May 24.

If Sir Ranulph reaches the top not only will he be the oldest Briton to reach the summit – he will also have achieved the ultimate grand slam of being the only person to have crossed both polar icecaps and reached the top of the world’s highest mountain.

When you come ‘back to earth’ take a quiet moment and listen to the Robert Wyatt song – At Last I am Free. Slip in a quiet word with our maker as well and you have covered the bases. Sir, you are just magnificent. Regards from the Peak District, John C.

A better script for climbing Mt. Everest could not have been better written for my son Tanner. He is in the company of greatness and as his father, I thank you for giving him this opportunity. I wish you a safe and memorable jouney. Our thoughts, prayers and admiration are with you. Steve Bixler
