On the road

The trek to Everest Base Camp is a well worn path – and it’s easy to see why. The lush, verdant valley snakes up through the mountains and is enclosed on each side by snow dashed, jagged Himalayan peaks that rise up and disappear into the clouds.
Climbing Everest is one thing – getting the equipment in place to enable you to climb it is another.
The only way to get to base camp is by foot; be it human or yak, and this is also the only way to get equipment there.
Trekkers and climbers share the trail with porters and yaks who form a slow and deliberate human conveyor belt.
Accommodation en route is in tea houses. And at the end of the day, hot flasks of tea await in the centre of the house, which is warmed by a fire powered by yak dung.
The trek is expected to take around 10 days.

Keep it up Sir Ranulph. I recently did a run for charity which was inspired by your endeavours. If this is making people like me get off my backside then maybe it’s pushing others to do more for charity. A winner never quits and a quitter never wins.

Looking forward to your triumphant return, Ranulph, and have left a space on my bookshelf for the book. We have just had Joanna Lumley for a meal in aid of one of your charities…you next?
