Mountain closed

May 1st, 2008 at 12:00 pm |

The world’s highest mountain has today been officially closed. The Nepalese side of Everest has been closed for two days, May 1 and May 2, to allow the Olympic flame to reach the summit of the mountain – from the Chinese side.

Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Team Marie Curie have headed down the valley to Pengboche to rest and recuperate whilst climbing is prohibited.

From May 3 the mountain will reopen allowing the Sherpas to climb and fix the route up to Camp 3. This will enable climbers to continue their acclimatisation period.
