Kenton Cool on Sir Ranulph Fiennes

Mountain guide Kenton Cool first met Sir Ranulph Fiennes whilst working as a guide in Switzerland three years ago. Kenton said: “I went to a meet and greet evening and everybody was sitting round the table introducing themselves, the guy at the end of the table said, ‘my name’s Ran,’ – then the penny dropped; Sir Ranulph Fiennes; childhood hero.”
Sir Ranulph asked Kenton to guide him up the notorious north face of the Eiger. At the time Sir Ranulph had no climbing experience, had lost the use of his fingers on his left hand and suffered from severe vertigo. After five cold, terrifying days in March 2007 Sir Ranulph and Kenton reached the top of the Eiger and raised £2.7 million for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
