Hoist the flag

At Sir Ranulph’s request Kenton Cool and Dr Rob Casserley took the Marie Curie Cancer Care flag to the summit of Everest.
Kenton Cool said: “I’m pleased that we got up there, pleased that we got the flag up there, but it was a horrible summit. I feel completely beaten up. I think partly it’s disappointment over the fact that Ran didn’t make it, but both Rob and I, for some reason, found it a hard summit day.
“Ran made his decision, and he was very matter of fact about it. The way he said it there was no debating it. I apologised to him – I felt I had let him down in a way. It’s nice to bag a summit, but I wasn’t here to for that – I was here to get Ran to the top.
“I always tell Ran off for saying things are a failure and it wasn’t a failure because we got the flag to the top. On expedition you have to be safe, you have to have lots of fun, and then summits come third. So Ran is going home safe and sound, I hope he has had a lot of fun, he has played a lot of cards, monopoly, scrabble, he always has a smile on his face, but unfortunately there was no summit this time.”
The Everest Challenge has raised £1.73 million so far and Sir Ranulph is calling for people to keep on donating to reach the target.
“So as long as we reach our target of £3 million for Marie Curie I will be happy.”
Here you can see the pictures from the summit, and a round up of all of the images that have bought the Everest Challenge alive over the last few months.

What beautiful images to round off what has been a truly inspiring presentation, allowing us earthly mortals to share that long journey with Ran and his fellow-climbers! Kenton, there was no failure. I have always said to my daughter, ‘Remember that the only failure for you or for me would be not to have tried.’ Ran, what you have accomplished is miraculous. I hope you will reach your target, as you always have done in the past.

Hi, Congratulations to one and all. I sure RAN is in good heart although he had to pull out. The summit sounds a bit of a damp squib compared to all the difficulties you must have encountered to get there. However, from my Wife and I congratulations once again. Hope the target is reached.

Firstly, congratulations on a fantastic achievement. Summiting Everest is an endeavour few can hope for let alone attempt, so well done all!!
I had the pleasure of meeting Sir Ran at the launch at Rhodes 24, (I was the fan from the staff team who made poor Sir Ran sign all my books, including my Tom Crean book!)
Marie Curie is a a very special cause and this effort is applaudable in every level.
I look forward to your next adventures in 2009.

Hello Kenton….all the right decisions were made, the flag was hoisted, Sir Ran is safe, the younger ones rallied and completed the challenge, and donations for the most important reason of this adventure are well over the halfway mark…what a tremendous feat. Spirits up Kenton, and keep smiling…Cheers Sand

Congratulations To Ran and all the team. You have nothing to be ashamed of for not going the last few yards, especially with your amazing record of Antarctic and Canadian Arctic Travel. It is my great privilege to have known you and contributed in a very small manner in the latter expedition.
